What is the Rubber Fig plant?

The Ficus Elastica, also known as the India Rubber Tree or India Rubber Fig, is a perfect plant for beginners and seasoned veterans alike. Its natural hardiness makes this houseplant incredibly simple to care for.

When you purchase this member of the Rubber Plant family, you can expect rapid growth that sees it grow tall and sport its classic glossy, thick green leaves. Perfect for placing in the corner of any room, or as natural bookends for your desk at home!

Light CareLight Care

The Rubber Fig prefers bright, indirect sunlight. You can achieve this type of lighting in many ways, such as through placing it behind a window curtain or having it sit near an eastern-facing window.

Make sure that your plant is not placed in total shade or any other space that offers little to no daily light. This may result in slowed or stunted growth.

Water CareWater Care

Water this plant twice a week. Drench the soil, and then wait until it is partially dry before watering again. Reduce the amount of water that you provide your plant during winter months, when growth is not as consistent.

To check the water levels of your plant’s soil, place a water meter 6-8 inches into the soil, where it will give you an accurate indication. If you do n’t own a water meter, stick one finger knuckle-deep into the soil. At this depth, you will be able to accurately account for the soil’s level of moistness.

Food GuideFood Guide

March to September is the Rubber Fig’s growing season, during which you should feed your plant every 2-4 weeks. Use a houseplant fertilizer that is diluted to ½ of the recommended serving size. Avoid feeding your plant during the winter, as that could potentially lead to stunted growth.

Staff Holy Grail Pro-Tip:

The Indoor Rubber Plant is revered for its beauty, but did you know that it can also be used as a form of natural air purifier? To ensure that your plant is healthy and capable of scrubbing toxins from your home, make sure to always water it when the top inch of soil is dry, and fertilize once per month during the growing season.
